The primary goal of
our Ergonomics program is help others to recognize and address ergonomic
concerns in the workplace. Ergonomic problems can be addressed through
engineering and/or administrative controls. Call our office for an
ergonomics evaluation of your work environment. We also have ergonomic
workstations set up in our office
available on a trial basis.
Contact the Department of Safety &
Environmental Management (7-6913) or fill out the online form for an evaluation of your work space.
What is Ergonomics?
Ergonomics is the study of human characteristics for the
appropriate design of the working environment. Ergonomic researchers strive
to use this type of knowledge to adapt the work environment to the people
instead of the other way around. Ergonomics aims to make the work
environment safe through the improved design, use and manipulation of tools,
tasks, workstations and equipment. Typically, the use of proper ergonomics
improves worker well-being and efficiency by limiting the impact of physical
stressors and environmental factors on the health and comfort of the
individual. In short, ergonomics describes the science of “designing the job
to fit the worker, and not forcing the worker to fit the job.”
Physical stressors result from tasks requiring repetitive motions,
continuous vibration, excessive force, and awkward postures. The actions may
disturb the functioning of nerves, muscles, ligaments, and tendons resulting
in Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs). These RSIs include Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome, Tenosynovitis and Tendonitis.
Environmental factors can affect the Indoor Environmental Quality. These
factors could range from poor air quality, excessive noise due the operation
of heavy equipment or improper lighting in a building or office. Some of the
physical impacts of environmental factors on a worker include headaches,
congestion, fatigue, and eyestrain. Additionally, it is important to note
that small modifications to working postures and techniques, equipment
layout and handling can lead to improved physical and mental well-being.
